Biographical note
Gabriele Poole was born in Naples, Italy, on August 15, 1963. His father is from
Arlington in the
United States and his mother is from Naples, Italy. He spent part of his childhood in
the US before his family moved back to Italy . He studied
English and Swedish languages and literatures at the Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples, then moved to the
States for a few years, where he studied English literature at University of
Notre Dame and was Research Assistant for Prof. Joseph Buttigieg, his main
job being
helping out with the translation into English of Antonio Gramsci's Prison
Notebooks. He obtained an M.A. in 1991 and returned to Italy where he
continued his studies at Università "La Sapienza" in Rome, obtaining a Dottorato di Ricerca ("doctoral degree") in
"Literatures of English-Speaking
Countries" in 1996. In 1998, he finished his Ph.D. at University of
Notre Dame, with a major in Critical Theory, and minors in 19th and 20th century
English Literature. His dissertation is on the works of Lord Byron, particularly on
the dialogic
relations between the figure of the Byronic hero and the stylistic, narrative, psychological and
political features of the works.
As translator, he has worked for more than twenty years in various fields. As research consultant he has worked for Carrefour Lazio, part of the European Carrefour Network, and Fondazione Censis. For Carrefour Lazio, from 2000 to 2005 he directed project NORIA (Nuovo Osservatorio delle Risorse per l'Agricoltura), supervising the research along with Dr. Marco Baldi of the Censis Foundation and designing the associated website (www.noria.lazio.it) along with programmer Dr. Luca Morandini .
From 1997 to 2005, he taught English language as Language Expert (CEL) at University of Cassino. From 2005, he has been teaching at the same university as Assistant Professor (Ricercatore) of English Language and Translation.
He is currently working on a translation of a selection of poems by John Matthias.
